A Glimpse into Riyadh's Architectural History

Riyadh has a rich architectural history that has evolved over time. Let us have a look at its history, beginning with its traditional roots and progressing to modern developments.

Traditional Roots:

Though its roots trace back to pre-Islamic times, it gained prominence in the mid-18th century when it became the capital of the First Saudi State. King Abdulaziz Al Saud, who unified the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932, was responsible for the city's metamorphosis. The city was founded on mud-brick buildings, small lanes, and courtyard-style residences. These designs were functional, providing shelter from the desert sun as well as a sense of community and privacy.

Key Milestones:

Diriyah: One of the most significant milestones in Riyadh's architectural history is Diriyah, an ancient mud-brick fortress that served as the first Saudi capital in the 18th century. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of the city's historical importance.

Masmak Fortress: Built in the 19th century, the Masmak Fortress is another iconic structure. Made from clay and mud bricks, it played a crucial role in the unification of the kingdom. It's now a museum that tells the story of the city and the role it played in the founding of the Saudi kingdom.

National Museum of Saudi Arabia: This museum provides an in-depth look at the history, culture and art of Saudi Arabia. It also provides a glimpse into the country's past, featuring artifacts from pre-Islamic and Islamic periods.

The Al-Masmak Grand Mosque: With its enormous size and elaborate design, the Al-Masmak Grand Mosque symbolizes Riyadh's long history of religious practice. It is an example of classic Islamic architecture and art that honors Islam's spiritual principles.

Modern Developments in Riyadh by 2030

Riyadh has witnessed remarkable transformations in its architectural landscape in recent decades, with a focus on modernity, infrastructure, and urbanization. Thanks to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to put the country on the tourism map, the kingdom is home to some of the region’s most impressive developments.

Al Widyan

Commonly referred to as a city within a city, is located north of Riyadh. It will be divided into 12 areas and will cover seven million square meters. It will have entertainment, education, and leisure facilities, as well as 20,000 new dwellings, and will aim to be the cool cosmopolitan area of the capital. Best of all, more than half of the development will be home to a park – we’re talking wadis and walkways.

Amaala

Amaala, which is located between Neom and the Red Sea, claims to be an all-year-round family wellness destination as part of Saudi Vision 2030, which intends to diversify the Saudi economy. The destination spans 4,155 square kilometers and is divided across three areas in the Prince Mohammed bin Salmon Natural Reserve. It's no surprise that it was inspired by the adjacent Red Sea. So we're thrilled to hear that it'll have a marine life institution, a yacht club, 3,000 hotel rooms, residences, and cutting-edge recreational facilities. Amaala is divided into three sub-projects: Triple Bay, Coastal Development, and The Island.

New Murabba

In early 2023, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud established the New Murabba Development Company (NMDC) to build Riyadh's largest contemporary downtown.

The development will be 19 square kilometers in size and will be located northwest of the capital. There will include about 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and over 980,000 square meters of retail space.

The Mukaab, a 400 cubic-meter structure that will be the world's first immersive destination with digital and virtual technologies, will be the center of attraction. The project is expected to cost more than $50 billion and will be completed by 2030.

Another example is the "Green Residences" project, where Ray Fit Out integrated green walls and rooftop gardens.
